Onion, Jalepeno and Black Olive Salsa (vegan)

Ingredients:

1 Large onion
5 Jalapeños
3-4 Cloves of garlic
Dry basil
Dry cilantro
2 14.5oz cans of diced tomatoes
1 5.75oz can of jumbo black olives
Sugar
Non-iodized Salt (I have no personal issue with iodized salt, but for this recipe, non-iodized is necessary. It matters for some random reasons)
Pepper
One small can of tomato paste. If you have half a can lying around, you’ll probably use less than that in this recipe.

Chop onions small - you know, the little half/three-quarter-centimeter squares you like? Yeah, just like that. Put in some tupperware with a lid on it for now.
Chop jalapeños even smaller. I don’t recommend blending them, but you basically want to end up with small bits. It doesn’t have to be uniform. Put it all in the same tupperware from step 1.
Add salt to the tupperware mixture enough to make the onions and jalapeños ”sweat” - this isn’t for taste - add about a half-teaspoon. Close the tupperware and shake it all up.
Put the two cans of diced tomatoes in a medium sized pot on the stove and turn it on the lowest heat possible. This is a slow-cook recipe.
Chop up the garlic cloves as small as possible, just like you did with the jalapeños. Again, no food processor necessary - the end result being non-homogenous is a good thing.
Put the garlic in the tupperware with the jalapeños, onions and salt from step 3. Add a tiny bit more salt. Add pepper, basil and cilantro in proportions you’ll like - this is modifiable later on. I usually try a 50/50 blend of basil and cilantro, about 2 teaspoons. Add a tablespoon of water - more or less doesn’t really matter, just enough to moisten all the dry spices you added. Close the tupperware again and shake it to mix.
Wait 5 minutes. Lower the temperature of the tomatoes if your stove goes any lower (I’m serious about it being low).
Chop up half of the can of black olives a little bigger than the jalapenos. Add to tupperware mixture, put the lid on and shake it up.
Wait 5 minutes.
Taste the mixture. The onions should still be slightly crunchy, with a hint of jalapeño, and the spiciness of it should hit you about 20-30 seconds in. This is going to be very acidic to start, so have a small cup of water sitting by.
Add sugar to cut the acidity. You can’t really fix it easily, so don’t add too much to start - usually a teaspoon of sugar does the trick. You’ll know when it doesn’t burn right away when you try the mixture.
Turn off the stovetop (at this point, the diced tomatoes are probably simmering-ish). Immediately add the mixture from the tupperware and mix it up.
The mixture will most likely be a little thin. Add tomato paste a tiny little bit at a time until the salsa doesn’t immediately fall off of the spoon when you pick it up. It will thicken as it cools.
Taste the salsa. Add the tiniest bit of sugar at a time and mix to kill the acidity.
Put in something that can be stored in the fridge and put it in the fridge until it cools down.

Cooling down will take a little over an hour and a half, should serve at least 5-8 people.

Blueberry Balsamic Vinaigrette Recipe

Ingredients:

Blueberries
Fresh Basil
Balsamic Vinegar
Cilantro
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper
Sugar

Put blueberries, balsamic vinegar, fresh basil and cilantro in a food processor and turn it on for a couple seconds.
Let it sit for two minutes.
Add sugar, salt and pepper to taste. Sugar is to cut the acidity, not to add sweetness. Don’t overdo it. If it tastes a little sweet, add a little more balsamic until it’s between sweet and acidic.
Add olive oil and use a hand blender on it until it’s homogenized.

Openindiana: Splitting an LACP aggregated link

Recently I have found a reason to have 2 links to my Openindiana file server instead of 1, namely iSCSI traffic clogging up the single aggregated link.

Until I get 2 more links on this box, I’m going to need them to be split up.

More after the bump…

Originally, aggr1 was configured with LACP across e1000g0 and e1000g1 as 192.168.0.3. I want e1000g0 to be 192.168.0.3 and e1000g1 to be 192.168.0.5.

To see the current configuration:
dladm show-aggr -s

To remove the second interface from aggr1:
dladm remove-aggr -l e1000g1 aggr1

Configure the second interface with an IP:
ifconfig e1000g1 plumb 192.168.0.5 up

Stop any services you have configured to bind on that IP:
(for me, bind and minecraft - everything else sits on 0.0.0.0):
svcadm disable bind
echo “stop” > /rspool/minecraft/minecraft_IN.fifo

Log out of the aggregated IP, and SSH into the second interface (in this case, 192.168.0.5).

Unplumb aggr1:
ifconfig aggr1 unplumb

Delete aggr1:
dladm delete-aggr aggr1

Plumb the first interface with the original IP:
ifconfig e1000g0 plumb 192.168.0.3 up

Start services back up:
svcadm enable bind
/rspool/minecraft/minecraft.sh

Prereqs:
pkg install SUNWiscsit

Creation of zvol:
zfs create -V 500G rspool/TimeMachine

Add to SCSI block disk:
sbdadm create-lu /dev/zvol/rdsk/rspool/TimeMachine

Get GUID for SCSI target mode framework adding, etc.:
sbdadm list-lu

Add to SCSI target mode framework:
stmfadm add-view 600144f044bb4a0000004e204e5e0001

Create iSCSI target:
itadm create-target

Get target info (target name, etc) for initiator, deleting target, etc:
itadm list-target -v

nMedia PRO-LCD under LCDd/lcdproc on OpenIndiana/OpenSolaris

I specifically needed hd44780 and thought I needed lis, so I spent a bit of time on getting configure to recognize libusb and libftdi.

This writeup is how I got the nMedia PRO-LCD ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811996003&cm_re=nmedia_pro-lcd-_-11-996-003-_-Product ) to work under LCDd on the latest OpenIndiana build (148).

configure needs pkg-config:

pkg install gettext

wget the latest version of libftdi (I know a version of libftdi is installed by default, but compiling sets up libftdi.pc etc):

tar zxvf libftdi-0.18.tar.gz
cd libftdi-0.18
./configure
make
make install

It is probably possible to just create libftdi.pc in PKG_CONFIG_PATH ( for me, /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig ), but I did not do it that way.
I did, however, do that for libusb.pc:

It may not be correct, but it worked to compile lcdproc. Looking back, I probably did not need libusb/libftdi at all since I used /dev/term/0 with hd44780 mplay driver.

You should get the “Welcome to LCDproc!” message on the PRO-LCD if you left it in the config, otherwise you’ll get the LCDd status screen.

And that’s basically it - apologies if this is a little rough - This basically covers “How to get LCDd to run on OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana/Solaris 11 Express” as well as “A hack to get hd44780 to do what lis is supposed to do for lis.”

The hd44780/lis hack should probably also work for any LIS compatible VFD, I am guessing (but have not tested).

An OpenIndiana Based Central Home Media Server

Yet another documentary-ish post.

My own requirements:

>=8TB to consolidate all of my drives and media on
At least RAID5 level reliability (maybe one hot spare, if the case has the space)
Live deduplication
Easily expandable
Selective backup/sync to S3
Watched directories (i.e. /torrents, where I just save the file and let the server download or help seed, etc)
Network failover (and, potentially, link aggregation)
The ability to use it with Time Machine (CIFS, here)
A way to tell the condition of the array at a glance, without having to connect the server to a monitor or log into it (got a case with a case LED for this one)

Most of the setup is covered in mschenck’s tutorial at http://www.tek-ops.com/archives/350.

This will end up being a CIFS and NFS server, however I’ll need to figure out the schema for content, as deduplication can be set on the dataset level (see http://blogs.sun.com/bonwick/entry/zfs_dedup ) .

I.e.:
I probably have drives that I’m going to copy to the array, that have almost all of the same photos on them, but when dealing with photos, I probably want to verify the blocks, as you don’t get a second chance to take the same photo, so the tank/photo dataset will be set dedup=verify.

HOWEVER, I have something similar with my (non-itunes) music collection…and don’t much care if every block is absolutely the same - I can almost always go back to one of my old hard drives and get it off, or rip the CD, OR (worst case scenario) just buy it on iTunes so the not-so-friendly RIAA can be absolutely sure that I have the requisite rights to have the song. dedup=on in this case, as with random tv/movies.

Also, in the process, I get to reduce my movie and tv collection to only what is /not/ on hulu and/or netflix.

Is there ever any reason not to turn on deduplication?

On December 11, I responded with the following 2 emails

I have received an email saying I purchased a “gift card for ptogr” the other day that is inaccurate, if it helps.

I did not purchase the gift card, and do not know who would use my account to do so - otherwise I have a number of devices on my account for myself and direct family (Two iPod touches - one for me and my wife, one iPad for my mom).

I am the only person that has had the password to the account, though, and only I authorize or make purchases.

Hmmm, it looks like the $50 did go through to my bank account:

This should be reversed. I absolutely did not purchase that gift card.
Also, what’s happening with my iTunes account?

On December 13, I went to the Soho Apple Store and learned that the Apple Store does not support iTunes store service, and also does not know of any phone numbers to call iTunes Store Customer Support.

On December 16, I emailed someone in Apple corporate that was recommended in the above link. So far, still nothing. This is really ridiculous.
On the afternoon of December 16, I called 1-800-275-2273 and got a human. Since he was AppleCare (not iTunes support), he was evidently in IM conversation with iTunes support, who, after 40 minutes, said that they would send me an email within 24-48 hours (like every other email they’ve sent since December 7).

I am still waiting on the email from iTunes customer support.

I plan on updating this post as events continue.

Suggestions are welcome.

Two immediate questions come to mind:

Why has no one questioned th3j35t3r’s unhindered ability to be judge, jury and prosecutor in online affairs?
If XerXes takes down websites with a technically complex, low bandwidth DoS that exploits the vulnerabilities of various online HTTP servers, why did the attacks range between 5 and 18 Gigabit (Musings: where did the wikileaks primary hosting provider fit 5 to 18Gb capable lines??? Infiniband to the server rack? 20 servers with 2xGb ethernet each connected to load balancers? Something to think about: wikileaks’ sites were accessible for most of the day! )?

The first question seems to be the most pertinent - in the age where so many people are involved in the struggle for “Net Neutrality,” why isn’t there more “pressure” on governments to do something about th3j35t3r, especially if he alone seemingly has the ability to govern what exists on the internet?

Further: in an age where governments are losing the ability to govern the internet, why don’t they see th3j35t3r as a very singular threat?

Those morally supporting th3j35t3r’s actions, if willing:

Please rationalize your support of th3j35t3r’s actions in context of the concept of a trial by jury.
Also, if willing to take the time, please rationalize exactly what response you would take if you found yourself to be the subject of an attack by th3j35t3r.
